Erasmus Mundus Action 1 programme:

EMECW• In addition to the successful Erasmus Mundus Programme introduced in 2004, the EC in 2007 introduced an additional mobility scheme titled Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window (EMECW), designed to foster co-operation between higher education institutions and the exchange of students, researchers and academic staff from EU Member States and targeted so-called Third-countries. The Erasmus Mundus programmes started in 2004 and offer scholarships for teachers and students from non-European countries. The programme is a co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education which promotes the European Union as a centre of excellence in learning around the world. It supports European top-quality Masters Courses and enhances the visibility and attractiveness of European higher education in third countries. It also provides EU-funded scholarships for third country nationals participating in these Masters Courses, as well as scholarships for EU-nationals studying in third countries. The EU's Erasmus Mundus project makes Europe’s educational opportunities more accessible to the rest of the world by granting scholarships to non-European students attending select programmes. Some of these eligible programmes involve Swedish universities. Scholarship applications are made directly to the institution hosting the programme.

In 2004 the European Commission selected the first 19 Erasmus Mundus masters courses, involving 82 European universities, to start at the beginning of the academic year 2004-2005, and in February 2005 the European Commission selected a further 17 Erasmus Mundus master’s courses, involving 69 European universities new to the scheme.
Out of 36 Erasmus Mundus masters courses eight involved Swedish universities. They were:

• The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU, is a partner in a Masters programme of Science in European Forestry organised by the University of Joensuu, Finland, the Master of Science in European Forestry. Other partners are the University of Lleida, Spain, Wageningen University, Netherlands, the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences – BOKU, Austria, and the Albert-Ludwigs University in Freiburg, Germany. The two-year programme focuses on policy aspects of sustainable forestry. The programme is truly international with thecourses being held in Sweden and POC in Austria. The AP, Thesis periods and elective courses can be taken in any of the partner universities according to the student’s individual study plan. At SLU the Department of Forest Products and Markets in Uppsala is administering the programme.

Uppsala University is a partner in a programme organised by the University of Duesto, Spain; the NOHA Joint European Master’s Course in International Humanitarian Aid. Other partners are he Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, RUB University of Bochum, Germany, the University of Aix-Marseille, University College Dublin and the University of Groningen, Netherlands. The 18-month programme focuses on providing the skills and education needed to work in the area of international humanitarian assistance. It covers the following topics: International Law; Anthropology, Peace and Conflict Research, Geopolitics, Peacebuilding and Development, Relief Aid Management, International Institutions Organisations, Human Security, Medicine and Epidemiology.

The programme starts in September with an intensive course preliminary at Universidad de Deusto-Bilbao followed by a general course in Uppsala which is divided into five modules: International Law, Management, Geopolitics, Anthropology and Public Health. The second semester includes a thematic course at one of the network universities and in addition to that there is a period of internship and the writing of a master's thesis.
The Master of Humanitarian Assistance Programme is intended for students with a first academic degree of relevance for work in the field of international humanitarian assistance.

Karolinska Institutet Medical University (KI) is a partner in a programme organised by the Charité University Medical School in Berlin; the European Master of Science Programme in International Health. Other partners are the University of Copenhagen, the University of Bordeaux, the Royal Tropical Institute at Free University Amsterdam, the Institute of Child Health at University College London, Queen Margaret University College Edinburgh and the University of Bergen. The one year programme is part of TropEd, a network of European institutions which collaborates to provide education and training aimed at providing health care in the developing world.
At KI it is the Division of International Health at the Department of Public Health Sciences that administers the European Master of Science Programme in International Health. Contact person: Anna-Lena Paulsson
The main objective of the programme is to raise awareness of current global health concerns. Students become qualified to identify and critically analyse key factors shaping the health and well-being of populations in low- and middle-income countries and to formulate effective and appropriate responses to complex health-related issues. Six possible study tracks are offered for this degree and reflect the strengths of the consortium institutions: Tropical Medicine and Disease Control; Health Systems, Health Policy and Management; Sexual and Reproductive Health; Child Health; Health Research Methods; and Health in Emergencies. Each study track begins with a 3 month core course from September to December. Core courses provide a common basis of the main subject areas for all students. Students receive 20 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credit points upon successful completion of their core course.

Luleå University of Technology in Kiruna is co-hosting SpaceMaster – the Joint European Master in Space Science and Technology, which gives students the opportunity to study space science at six universities around Europe. SpaceMaster is offered in collaboration with Cranfield University, UK, Czech Technical University, Helsinki University of Technology, Julius-Maximilians Universität Würzburg, Germany and Université Paul Sabatier Toulouse III, France. The intent is to build up a knowledge base that can benefit the European space industry. The programme takes two years to complete. Luleå University of Technology is also part of AMASE: Joint European Master’s Programme in Advanced Materials Science and Engineering Programme (2 years), with Universität des Saarlandes, Germany; Institut National Polytechnique de Lorraine, France; and Universitat Politechnica de Catalunya, Spain. The aim of the Masters programme is to provide: • A well-integrated language and cultural experience; • Education in close relation to the research activities of the four consortium members; • Education in advanced materials, to enhance the innovation potential of the students in their future activities; • Preparation of the students for life-long learning in new places and new education/work system; and • Enhancement of networking activities within the EU and with third countries in the field of research and education.At Luleå University of Technology the programme is administered by the Dept. of Applied Physics, Mechanical, and Materials Engineering.

• The Masters Course in Applied Ethics is a new one-year programme coordinated by Linköping University and offered in collaboration with Utrecht University in the Netherlands and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. Linköping and Utrecht are the degree-awarding institutions. The programme’s purpose is to develop ethical reflection and competence in topics as diverse as multicultural conflicts, bioethics, business and IT. At Linköping University the programme is administered by the Centre for Applied Ethics.

Lund University is part of the GEM programme: Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation for Environmental Modelling and Management (1 year, 6 months). This EU Master of Science (M.Sc.) programme is a ongoing joint European degree program that has been developed by leading European institutes in the field of geo-information management in five European countries (Sweden; UK – University of Southampton; Netherlands – International Institute for Geo-Information; Poland – Uniwersytet Warszawski; and the Czech Republic). The course aims at development of a critical understanding of technical and scientific tools together with excellent management abilities and personal skills. Students will acquire general scientific competencies and skills, and a thorough awareness of, and analytical capability in, environmental science fields. MESPOMLund University is also part of MESPOM: Environmental Science, Policy and Management (2 years), with the Central European University (Közép-Europai Egyetem Alapitvany) in Budapest, Hungary; University of Manchester, UK; and the University of the Aegean (Panepistimio Aigaiou) in Mytilene, Greece. The first two terms, taught in Budapest, comprise mandatory and elective units focused on legal, economic, and political as well as scientific and technological aspects of key environmental challenges and the society-environment interaction. During the third term students choose between specialised tracks in either preventive environmental strategies in the public and private sector (at Lund University) or environmental sciences and pollution control (at the University of Manchester). Both tracks emphasize hands-on research and practical experience in industries, organizations, and laboratories.
During the 4th term, the students conduct their individual research projects and write Masters theses at any of the four Consortium partners. This is normally combined with internships at inter-governmental organizations, government, industry or NGOs in Europe or home countries. At Lund University the programme is administered by the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics, IIIEE.
